Test of English as Foreign
Language or the TOEFL test is a standardized test to evaluate the English
language proficiency of an aspirant, whose native language is not English. The TOEFL test is
the most widely accepted test for the English language throughout the world
where English is the medium of teaching. Initially started for the US
Universities, the TOEFL test score is now required to get admission to
approximately 6000 institutions and agencies over 110 countries. In US and
Canada there are about 2400 institutes where you need to produce your TOEFL score before
seeking admission. Though a high TOEFL score does not guarantee a better chance
in the US Universities, clearing the exam is mandatory for each applicant
seeking admission.
The Internet Based Test or
the iBT was
introduced in 2005 and now it is the standard format of the test. The test is
of four hours and has four different parts.
Reading - This segment of the test needs you to
read a passage and then answer question about the content, intent of the author
and ideas that are inferred in the passage. The questions in this section also

Listening - In this section the questions refer to
the content and intent of the phrases, attitude of the speaker and meaning of
the short conversations or lectures.
Speaking - This section is introduced with the new
iBT format. Questions in this section are related to personal experiences and
preferences and tasks involved are reading passages and listening to short
conversations and lectures. In this part of the test the candidates have to

Writing - For this part of the test, the test
takers have to defend a position relative to a specific general topic. They
also have to answer questions related to the main points of the passage and the
