CAT IIM PORTAL

Common Admission Test (CAT) is a computer based test held in India. This test scores a person on the bases of Quantitative Ability, Data Interpretation, Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning. According to Asian Survey of Exams, CAT is rated as the third toughest test in Asia, after UPSC's Indian Engineering Services at first and IIT-JEE at the second spot.

The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) started this exam and use the test as an important component in selecting students for their business administration programs.

The test is conducted every year by one of the IIM's based on a policy of rotation. Other institutes can also opt to use the scores of CAT as a criteria for admissions.

In August 2011, it was announced that Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institute of Science (IISc) would also use the CAT scores, instead of the Joint Management Entrance Test (JMET), as the initial phase of the student selection process of their MBA and Masters in Management programmes from the academic year 2012-14.

Scope

CAT is conducted by the Indian Institutes of Management as a pre-requisite for admission to various management programmes of IIMs, Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Faculty of Management Studies (FMS), National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE) and Indian Institute of Science (IISc).

There are many non-IIM institutions that have registered to avail the CAT scores to be used in their admission process. CAT score use is restricted only for admission to IIMs and non-IIM member institutions.

CAT is normally conducted every year during a 21 day testing window (estimate but may vary) in the months of October and November. A candidate can appear for CAT only once during the 20-day testing window. The test score is valid for admission to the forthcoming academic year only.

What is CAT examination ? Explained by CF India Portal

ü   Greater flexibility in timing and scheduling of the test. This would allow more students to take the exam which would also create more competition.

ü  Like the GMAT and other CBTs, there could be the possibility of retaking the test in the same year instead of waiting for the next year (depending on CAT policy).

ü  In the long run this would significantly reduce the cost of administering these exams since manual checking is time consuming.

ü  CBTs would also encourage the IIMs to open more testing centers in the  future allowing further flexibility for   students to take the exam, since the marginal cost associated with more   students taking a CBT is comparatively less than in the manual process.

ü  If test scores are made available immediately after the test then students can apply to colleges in a more targeted manner.

ü  Over time if it becomes a standardised and adaptive test it is likely to be a better tool to test aptitude than the existing formats. So for the IIMs it is likely to be a better measure of aptitude check.
